Northrop Grumman Innovation Systems is currently seeking a Principal Electrical Engineer - Digital Analog to provide talent to our Defense Electronics Systems (DES) group in Northridge, CA.

Job Summary

Perform analysis, design, or test of one or more complex designs, which require use of ingenuity and creativity and without detailed direction from more senior engineers. Based on generally defined problems, study design concepts and criteria to ascertain the engineering principles involved. Without detailed direction, plan, prepare, and complete the design. Evaluate completed design with more senior engineers and other technical groups and make modifications necessary to achieve a design that satisfies requirements. Develop, coordinate, and conduct the test programs required to evaluate the design.

May also oversee component supplier design, analysis, manufacture, and test. May also oversee, with senior engineer support, subsystem supplier design, analysis, manufacture, and test.

Role description & Responsibilities:

Antenna Principal Engineer supports tactical missile system development and production programs. 

Key responsibilities include:

  • Develops, coordinates and conducts RF and Antenna designs and evaluations of engineering design concepts
  • Develops, coordinates and conducts EMI designs and evaluations of engineering design concept
  • Creates test plans and procedures for a variety of RF and Environmental testing.
  • Develops specifications and requirements, reviews Engineering Change Proposals, and generates formal whitepapers and failure reports.
  • Oversees or participates in RF testing and measurement using RF instruments and anechoic chambers.
  • Supports program Engineering Configuration Change Board (CCB), Corrective Action Board (CAB) and Failure Review Boards (FRB), as required.
  • Identifies opportunities for improvement based on review of failure data and supports development and implementation of component design improvements or updates.
  • Create designs and simulation models using computer modeling tools.
  • Supports design reviews and test activities, as needed. Supports subcontractor evaluation, selection and coordination activities with respect to RF needs. 

Experience and Skill Requirements:  

  • Minimum 7 years of experience in RF and antenna product design and development.
  • Proven hands on design experience of multi octave bandwidth antennas for Supersonic Aircraft / Missile platforms.
  • Experience in Radar Cross Section reduction techniques.
  • Experience in detection, beamforming and angle-of-arrival  estimation.  
  • Direct Digital conversion experience / signal  processing hardware experience / Data link experience is a plus.
  • Strong RF background with a good mechanical  understanding.
  • Experience desired in manufacturing support, characterization, test, installation and operation of antennas on missiles or aircraft and experience in general military RF systems.
  • EE, Physics, Math or equivalent BS or very significant experience required, MS or PhD preferred.
  • Active DoD Secret Clearance or ability to obtain clearance.
  • Ability to measure using RF Network Analyzers, Spectrum Analyzers, and signal generators and interpret RF Test data and radiation patterns.
  • Experience with Ansys HFSS software or equivalent modeling tools preferred.
  • Experience with High Temperature Materials.
  • Experience with Flight Hardware.
  • Ability to read and interpret Engineering  drawings/schematics.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and an ability to build effective working relationships are a must.
  • Ability to communicate findings to customers and  management.
  • Self-starter capable of performing assigned tasks with some direction.
  • Innovated thinker with a demonstrated ability of  solving complex problems which require ingenuity and “out of the box”  ideas.
  • Ability to work with cross-functional teams.
  • Safety engineering knowledge.
  • Ability to create or review presentations, emails, white papers, trade studies, and reports for content and accuracy.
