Northrop Grumman Innovation Systems is seeking a candidate to fill the Special Mission Aircraft (SMA) Engineering Manager of Systems and Test Engineering position in Ft. Worth, Texas.  The candidate will direct a diverse engineering workforce in the planning, design, development, and verification of integrated sensor systems, communication systems, datalink systems, weapon systems, and defense systems onto various airborne platforms. The manager has responsibilities for direction of the Systems, Test, and Certification engineering team and is responsible for personnel management of engineering staff within the department.  The manager also supports the engineering department head for assessing Technology Development planning for future growth and enhancements of the SMA product lines.  This manager will work closely with Business Development (BD) supporting establishment of the Independent Research and Development (IR&D) projects that provide the best benefit for future business.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • A candidate for this position will have had at least 10 years of working experience as a senior engineer within a development engineering department with focus on integrating systems onto aircraft as a senior-level engineer. The candidate will have had vast experience in product development, personnel management, and a project team-lead.
  • The candidate will have had a proven and successful record with civil, military, and commercial derivative certification processes and regulations. 
  • The position requires a strong working knowledge of airworthiness criteria in support of aircraft systems integration programs.  This candidate will have proven experience with test planning, conduct and reporting to support management of all lab and aircraft test requirements related to avionics and weapons integration efforts.
  • The candidate will have a demonstrated history of providing the front-line interfaces to Program Management (PM) with the assignment of Project Engineers and will provide resolutions to program office issues and concerns.
  • The candidate will possess experience with performing systems analysis associated with systems integration onto aircraft.  These skills should include analysis efforts related to: hazard assessments, system safety, Electromagnetic Environmental Effects (EEE), aerodynamics, acoustics, and component qualifications.
  • A strong background with advanced avionics, sensor, and communication systems are a plus for this position.

Communication Skills

  • The candidate must possess exceptional communication skills both in written and in verbal form. Communication skills will be especially important in this leadership position, where clear conveyance of instructions and information down the line to junior engineers will play a significant role in determining the overall performance of the engineering department.

Leadership/People Skills

  • The candidate must demonstrate natural leadership abilities, being able to influence and inspire a cross-functional team and influence senior engineering leadership. The candidate will be a likable and relatable people person who is able to make meaningful and lasting connections with others. The manager’s people skills will inspire trust and confidence in others who will then readily follow the insights and directives.


  • BS Degree in Mechanical, Aerospace or Electrical Engineering (or equivalent) is required. MS is preferred
  • 15+ years minimum experience in leadership of technical teams to include in-house development and subcontractor activities
  • 10+ years experience  in mod/maintenance of Special Operations aircraft
  • Multi-disciplinary engineering experience desired
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills; ability to present complex topics with vision and clarity (written and verbal). Must be able to clearly relate to Senior/Executive Leadership, as well as, a diverse customer base. Good briefing skills a must.
  • Demonstrated history of technical progression leading to a chef engineering leadership position
  • Active security clearance is required
